England’s Next Centurion: Jonny Bairstow

It was only last month we were celebrating Ben Stokes reaching 100 test matches – and now we’ve got another to add to England‘s collection!

This morning, Jonny Bairstow became the 17th England player to reach the impressive milestone as England play the fifth test in the series against India.

Bairstow started his test career for England against West Indies back at Lord’s in 2012, and heading into this final test against India is only 26 runs away from achieving 6,000 in his test career.

It hasn’t been straightforward for Jonny, however – since making his debut 12 years ago, for numerous reasons, he’s missed a total of 51 test matches for the Three Lions.

Having now reached the milestone though, Bairstow did joke about getting the tissues ready – as Jonny himself noted, he’s an emotional man – but once the game is underway it’ll all be business.

Those tissues could be handy though – as of writing in day one of the fifth test, England have already been bowled out for just 218, with India taking up batting duties now.

India are already 3-1 ahead in the series so England can’t catch them, but Ben Stokes believes the side has still “evolved” despite this.
